Porsche's Shift in EV Plans: Gas Cars Still in the Picture
Porsche’s plans for an all-electric future are changing. The company is now focusing on keeping gas-powered and hybrid models alive as electric vehicle (EV) sales slow down.
Slowing EV Sales
Porsche had originally set a goal to make 80% of its cars electric by 2030. However, with EV sales dropping, the company is reconsidering. Sales of its electric Taycan have dropped by 50% in 2024, and the Macan EV is also seeing slow demand.
A Return to Gas Engines
Porsche’s CFO, Lutz Meschke, said the company will continue to make cars with combustion engines for a while longer. He noted that many customers in the luxury car market are still interested in gas engines. As a result, Porsche plans to release new gas and hybrid models in the near future.
Despite its EV efforts, Porsche is not giving up on gas cars. The company will refresh popular models like the Panamera and Cayenne with updated combustion engines. Additionally, the Macan EV will keep a gas-powered version available in important markets, like the U.S.
Porsche still plans to release electric versions of its 718 and Cayenne models, with the Cayenne EV expected in 2026. However, these EVs might also come with hybrid or gas-powered options, depending on customer demand.
The shift in Porsche’s strategy reflects the changing trends in the automotive market. Many customers are not ready to fully embrace electric vehicles yet, especially in the premium luxury segment. Porsche is adapting its product plans to meet these needs while still focusing on electric innovation for the future.
