Krishna Janmashtami: The Story of Lord Krishna’s Birth and the Significance of This Festival
Curvy Background

Krishna Janmashtami, commonly known as Janmashtami, is a vibrant and joyous festival celebrated across India and around the globe. This festival commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu, who is revered for his divine wisdom, charm, and love. The story of Krishna's birth is not only captivating but also deeply symbolic, holding significant spiritual meaning for millions of devotees.

The Divine Birth of Lord Krishna

The tale of Lord Krishna's birth is one of the most fascinating stories in Hindu mythology. According to the story, Krishna was the eighth son of Queen Devaki and King Vasudeva, born in the city of Mathura. When Devaki married Vasudeva, a divine voice told her brother, Kamsa (Kansa), that Devaki’s eighth child would cause his death. Scared, Kamsa locked up Devaki and Vasudeva, and killed each of their newborns to stop the prophecy from happening.

However, destiny had other plans. On the night of Krishna's birth, miraculous events unfolded. The prison guards fell into a deep sleep, the prison doors unlocked themselves, and Vasudeva was able to carry the newborn Krishna across the turbulent Yamuna River to the safety of Nanda and Yashoda’s home in Vrindavana. It is said that Lord Vishnu's Shesh Naag, a multi-headed serpent, protected Vasudeva and baby Krishna during this perilous journey.

Janmashtami is celebrated on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Shravan or Bhadrapada, according to the Hindu lunar calendar. This year, Janmashtami falls on August 19, 2024.

The spiritual meaning of Krishna Janmashtami is more than just celebrating Lord Krishna’s birth. It represents the coming of divine joy (Ananda) into our lives. As the scriptures say, when this divine joy awakens within us, it drives away the darkness of ignorance and brightens our lives.
