While working at the Carlsberg Laboratory S P L Sorensen studied the effect of ion concentration on proteins, and because the concentration of hydrogen ions was particularly important, Sorensen introduced a simple scale to measure the ions. This is how the pH scale was born in 1909.

Born : 9th  Jan 1868

Died : 12th Feb 1939 (aged 71)

S. P .L. Sørensen was born in Havrebjerg in 1868. His father was a farmer; he began his studies at the University of Copenhagen at the age of 18. He wanted to make a career in Medicine but under the influence of Chemist S M Jørgensen, decided to change to chemistry.

The term pH is widely used in chemistry and biology. The significance of pH is that it measures the concentration of the hydrogen ion and 'ranks' them on a scale of numbers between 0 and 14.

Solutions with a pH value less than 7 are acidic and solutions with a pH greater than 7 are basicPure water is neutral, at pH 7 (25 °C), being neither an acid nor a base. Contrary to popular belief, the pH value can be less than 0 or greater than 14 for very strong acids and bases respectively.

Google today honours Danish biochemist Soren Peder Lauritz Sorensen for his revolutionary work in introducing to the scientific community, the concept of the pH scale. To mark and celebrate SPL Sorensen's introduction of the pH scale, Google has created an interactive Doodle.
